Lorden Lodge and Wine

Vergelegen, meaning "situated far away", was granted to the Governor of the Cape in 1700 and the property has had a long and fascinating history since that time. Willem Adriaan Van der Stel, was a man of divergent interests who transformed the uncultivated land into a veritable paradise. He planted vines, camphor trees and oaks, laid out fruit orchards and orange groves, and introduced cattle and sheep.
Vergelegen is a beautifully restored homestead and unique underground winery.

Lorden Lodge and Golf

Somerset West Golf Club is the oldest golf club in the area. Until about 1985 the course was divided into 11 and 7 holes but with a change of the layout it became conventional.
The greens are fairly large, and under bent grass they are always in a good condition. Seven of the holes have water perils and most greens are guarded bunkers or hillocks. Apart from the golfing section, the club also has facilities for bowls, tennis and squash.
